Fishing Lake Creation

Client:

Oaks Pool Carp Fishery

Location:

Beccles, Suffolk

Oaks Pool Carp Fishery is an exclusive new angling venue created in rural Suffolk and the culmination of a lifetime’s dream for owner James Cook. Set in 6.5 acres and surrounded by farmland, the fishery has been carefully designed to provide the ultimate carp fishing experience within a beautiful natural setting.

The design of the clay-lined lake was very important for the health and well-being of the carp and the for the enjoyment of the angler. It incorporates a variety of undulations and swim depths between 3-12 ft, with lots of interesting features to challenge anglers: gullies, plateaus, island shelves and marginal features.

There is a long, large plateau in the middle of the lake joining two central islands, plus a third marginal island. The aim was to encourage ‘year-round’ fishing across the entire lake, rather than all the fish holding in certain areas in the summer or winter. Thus, the design incorporates an area of both shallow and deep water in front of every swim,  which will appeal to the carp in different weather conditions and result in great angling opportunities for everyone.  An average depth of 7ft should also keep the fish moving and feeding in all seasons.

Working with James on this project has been a real pleasure for our team, bringing together James’ aspiration for the perfect fishery design and Miles Water Engineering’s extensive skills and experience in lake construction.

Although the lake itself took only 8 weeks to construct, the prior project preparation undertaken by Miles Water was meticulous; from initial land survey, design concept, planning permission, final design through to earthworks planning.

The most challenging aspect of the project was the size constraints of the site, although 6.5 acres was more than adequate and appropriate for the fishery. The earthworks planning had to be particularly precise in order to manage the soil movements for maximum efficiency and avoidance of double handling. Tackling this challenge starts within the project office, where detailed 3D models were created of the site to determine where the soil cut and fill material will go. For instance, topsoil is the first element to be lifted and the last to be laid, ensuring that this excavation is put in the right location at the start, will ensure the project is completed with maximum efficiency at the end.

From these final 3D models, diagrammatic plans are produced for the site team to implement. The on-site team utilise their skills and knowledge to deal with any ad hoc ‘sorting’ issues as they arise.  Understanding and reading the materials as the earthworks are handled is imperative to the project’s success. Issues such as sand pockets, backfilling, sealing banks and dealing with existing land drains were all expertly managed by the team.

Oaks Pool Carp Fishery opened in 2023 and members benefit from a range of on-site facilities, beautiful surroundings and excellent carp stock pedigree.
